Musicality Suite

Art and music have much in common.  Art is more than just pigment on a canvas, ink on a page, or metal welded together, while music is more than just notes and words on a page, notes played on an instrument, or sung by a voice.  Music and painting are both art forms, and there are many similarities between the two.   Repetition, tone, line, form, rhythm, space, color, and composition are just a few of the concepts contained in both art and music.   There is, however, a major difference between the way art and music are perceived:  music is heard, and art is seen.  It was my desire to combine the two, making them interchangeable.  I wanted to make paintings that when looked at would bring music to mind, and then, when the music was heard, have the listener think of the paintings.  The original premise for my work was to change people's perception of what is seen, and what is heard.  I felt that is what the best artwork does:  change the viewer's perception.  I wanted to change how music was seen, and how painting was heard.  I thought that if people could see a piece of music, or hear a painting, that this small change in their perception might trigger a bigger change in their perception of the world around them.
